Three Videos:
As a whole the piece is still untitled.
For day 6 I decided to create another video installation, and what I ended up with was three variations of the same piece to be displayed together on multiple tvs to be constructed in some way.
Through this work certain other ideas and ideologies began to surface.
Day 6 I began to think about stereotypes. And in brain storming the topic of blackface came up.
So, I began to search for stock footage of an old minstrel show style blackface performance.
I was finally satisfied with a video showing two “performers” putting on blackface, on stage. I was more interested in this type of footage as opposed to footage where the “performers” just appear on stage already in blackface.
There is a sort of emotive evocativeness conjured with these men “transforming” in front of our eyes.
The original audio proved useful as well. So this sound served as the back drop of the piece. It is important to hear a bit of what is said.
From there I brain stormed ways to exploit and transform this footage with some poignancy.
I manipulated a sound bite from Dr. Kings “I have a Dream speech” and took out a section where King states something to the effect of “100 years have past and…” he list a few things that are still happening. I repeated this sound bite in the audi track for my piece.
